Remember when I told you about my mixed tapes? I had made a terrible techno compilation called The Excel Mix: The Mix of the Future... ten years ago.

I found it.

My humiliation is now complete. The playlist reveals that most of this music cannot be classified as techno, and that this is just one more horrible demonstration on how culturally ignorant I was. (past tense applicable?)

Moving past the humiliation to the sentimentalism, I also discovered all the old tapes that Rob and I had made for each other when we first started dating. The exchange of music compilations between boyfriends/girlfriends is a decades old tradition that began with the invention of the cassette recorder. This is a tradition that is soon to be lost, through the rapid evolution of music culture and technology. Will couples of the future exchange music playlists?
Let's ask The Excel Mix: The Mix of the Future.

Excel Mix: Playlists? What's that?

Point taken, Excel Mix: The Mix of the Future.

I find it remarkable that I can look at these and still be flooded by memories of my early days with Rob. It's really comforting to remember that we started out in such a lovely way. It's easy to focus on shitty things when you've split up with another person. It's easy to list off all the things that we had done to drive each other apart. It's a lot harder to remember the things that we had done to pull each other together.

I briefly thought that I would recreate all the playlists on my itunes so that I could still hear those songs in that particular order, but it seemed better to let it go. Some things you've got to let go.
